I first met Gervase Pevarnik in the summer of 1980. We had both recently moved to Rochester to attend summer school at the Rochester Institute of Technology where we were enrolled in the school of photography's summer transfer program. We immediately connected because of many mutual interests and the proximity of our apartments at the time. When I first starting making photographs professionally, Gervase was a great inspiration to me. He pushed me to make photomicrographs rather than nature photographs as my personal work. He gave me a hard time when I made pictures that were like so many others he had seen. His wisdom at that time has created countless new opportunities for me that might have gone unachieved without his criticisms nearly 25 years ago.
